Living alone, the most familiar dilemma is this: you fancy some soup, but firing up the hob for a single bowl hardly feels worth it.

The Midea MY-E220 mini electric pressure cooker is a 1.8L single-serving size — just right for one or two people, and it fits on even the smallest worktop.

Pressure quick-cooking gets meat tender and full of flavour fast; there are set ways of doing slow soups, multigrain rice and baby congee, and the inner pot cleans up easily. Take the lid off and it doubles as a mini hotpot — one pot standing in for several.

A small pot for a small household: no need to buy a hulking machine for the occasional stew. Back from lectures or work, press one button, and the soup and rice sort themselves out.

Quick Recipes

  • Lotus root and pork bone soup: blanch the pork bones, cut the lotus root into chunky wedges, add ginger slices and pressure-cook for twenty-odd minutes — a pinch of salt to finish.
  • Millet and pumpkin congee: rinse the millet, add pumpkin chunks and choose the congee setting — thick, silky and gently sweet, just the thing on an evening when your stomach is out of sorts.

Tastes of Home

Cantonese wuzhimaotao (five-finger fig root) chicken soup and slow-simmered daily soups; Hubei lotus root and pork rib soup; Chaoshan-style braised beef shin and eggs; Jiangnan hongshaorou (red-braised pork); northeastern soy-braised pork spine; Sichuan-Chongqing fenzhengrou (steamed rice-flour pork) — one little pot, quietly taking over the job of "mum thinks you should be drinking more soup".
