Mid-Autumn Festival 2026 falls on 25 September. That week you'll most likely have just moved into halls — barely a lecture attended, barely a name learnt.

Back home, Mid-Autumn needs no thought at all — someone buys the mooncakes, the table lays itself. It's the first year away that teaches you: a festival has to be arranged, or it slips past without a sound.

Tea round a little stove — the easiest excuse there is to gather people

• Simmering on top — white tea, pu-erh, red date and longan tea, aged white tea with chenpi; once the steam rises, the whole room smells of it
• Roasting round the edge — little mandarins, chestnuts, niangao rice cakes, peanuts, sweet potatoes; getting the skins properly charred is the point
• Mid-Autumn flavours from every region — Cantonese lotus paste with salted yolk, Suzhou-style fresh pork mooncakes (even better warmed in an air fryer), Chaoshan lao bing, Yunnan ham mooncakes, Beijing zilaihong. With a pot of hot tea, it's that afternoon from home
