Ordering for a group dinner always splits into two camps: the barbecue people and the hotpot people. This pot's answer: everyone sit down — there's both.

The Konka grill-and-hotpot combo, in a white body, runs its grill plate and hotpot section on separate temperature controls at the same time; four or five friends round it, one half grilling, one half swishing, nobody giving way to anybody.

It runs off a plug, so a rental with no open flame or a flat that bans charcoal makes no difference; the grill plate sizzles with fat, the hotpot burbles away, and the whole table's warmth rests on this one machine.

Getting a "barbecue plus hotpot" night together in the UK used to mean queuing at a restaurant or giving up — now one pot sorts it in your living room.

Quick Recipes

  • Grilled pork belly: thin-sliced belly needs no marinade — let the grill plate crisp the edges in its own fat, then dip in a cumin-and-chilli dry mix or wrap in lettuce.
  • Tomato hotpot: dissolve a tomato base in boiling water, cook enoki mushrooms and tofu first, then swish in the beef rolls.

Tastes of Home

Qiqihar-style family barbecue with grilled chives and enoki mushrooms; Sichuan-Chongqing mala broth, Chaoshan beef hotpot, Cantonese dabinlu (home-style hotpot), northern clear-broth lamb rolls, Yunnan-Guizhou sour soup — grilling and hotpot each come from their own hometowns, and they reunite at the same table.
