Lay the board on the table, announce the classic opening cannon move, and for a moment you are back home.
This is a standard Chinese chess (xiangqi) set with solid, well-weighted pieces and board. Good for after-dinner games in halls, Chinese students' society events, or keeping your visiting parents company over a match or two.
Standard format — set it out and play. The rules are carved into most Chinese childhoods; no manual needed, only an opponent.
It fixes a small but persistent regret: wanting a game abroad and having no set. Chinese supermarkets rarely stock them, and posting one from home is slow and dear. Keep a set in the flat and the river border is always ready.
When to play
- Halls at night: winner stays on, loser goes to make the noodles.
- Teaching international friends: start with how the horse and elephant move, and teach a few Chinese characters along the way.
- Festivals: replay a game with your dad over video call — the board on your side of the screen.
A desk in a foreign country still has room for the river and the border. A taste of home, in a foreign kitchen — and on a foreign desk.
